YA Bloggers Want...A Genre Worthy of Obsession: Eve's Fan Garden

I'm very excited to host Gypsy Wings today for What YA Bloggers Want...also known as Gypsy Rae Photography, also known as Georgia Cranston!

Georgia is an artist, a writer, a mama, a book blogger at Eve's Fan Garden, a Twilight Mom, and has been a friend to readergirlz since the very beginning.

Check out her Esty shop, her website, and her amazing photostream to find out more about this one-of-a-kind shining star who is here to chat with us today about genres and obsessions. (We all have them, right?)

Welcome, Georgia!

It's kinda funny. What I want out of YA books tends to change on a pretty regular basis. For a while I was deeply DEEPLY in love with all things paranormal and fantasy. My obsession with those lasted for a few months and then I wanted contemporary, real life stories, and now? Now I want dystopian and post-apocalyptic stories. I am sure that sometime in the near future I will see something shiny and new and become obsessed once again.

But with ALL of the books available to me, what I really want are characters who are well written, a story that I can believe in, and something that makes me think, or
somehow inspires me, or makes me want to be better. And if it is not the kind of book that is intended to inspire, what I want is a story that sucks me in with the writing and maybe has a good love triangle... Because really, who doesn't love a good love triangle?

My favorite YA books

The Hunger Games
Series by Suzanne Collins
The Study Series and Glass Series by Maria V. Snyder
Matched by Ally Condie
Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Thanks for stopping by and telling us about your faves, Georgia! And in case you didn't know, Georgia is the genius artist behind the Tell Me a Secret handmade necklace I gave away for the TMAS launch party a few months ago. Isn't it gorgeous?

Readers, what genre do you obsess over? Have your obsessions changed over time or do you mainly stick with one genre? What would it take for you to take a peek at something else? Tell us in the comments for a chance to win this week's prize!

The What YA Bloggers Want series celebrates YA lit for YALSA's Teen Read Week and National Book Month!

  1. I like a GOOD love triangle, but they really are very common in YA literature these days. I've been reading a bit of historical fiction lately among the contemporary. (3:2 this month). It's not that my love for contemp has lessened, it's just that I've just acknowledged my love for historical fiction. :)

As I've mentioned though, in my guest post, I've always been a contemporary genre lover. I appreciate both the gritty and realistic, novels that address often difficult topics such as death, teen pregnancy (TMAS); bullying; drugs; eating disorders. I also like the fluffy stuff, you know, from authors like: Sarah Dessen, Elizabeth Scott, Deb Caletti, Susan Colasanti, etc. Or Summer reads: Jenny Han, Jennifer Echols...

  2. Hi HOlly...Hi Georgia! LOVE this interview with Georgia. She is fabulous and so multi talented!

If it were not for TM's and Eve's Fan Garden, I would still be stuck in my "I only read Dean Koontz" books. My sister got me hooked on the Twilight saga. That is how I found Twilightmoms and it has been quite the adventure since then. I have read books that I never in a million years thought I would read let alone fall in love with. I am reading romance, mysteries, historical fiction, anything paranormal, anything supernatural, mostly YA books. WHAT? A 37 year old mom and wife reading 99% YA books? You betcha!!! I am loud and proud in saying that YA books are my new found love! Thank you for a chance to win yet another chance at feeding my newest obsession, what I now call "book hopping" because I am hopping back and forth between all kinds of genres lately. What does it take for me to start a new obsession? WORD OF MOUTH. That is all. Simple huh?

    Thank you!!!

  3. The genre's I obsess over are fantasy, sci-fi, and dystopian. All of the books that I read in the genres have great imagination! But, that's not the only thing I look for. I also love a great story, unforgettable characters, and dragons! :)

  4. I mostly read fantasy because that's what I write. But my daughter and her friends are getting me into more sci-fi & dystopian. And knowing wonderful writers like you has gotten me to expand into more realistic fiction, which I also enjoy.

  5. I love all genre's, however lately I have found myself reading more YA books than anything else. My most recent read, "Principle Destiny" by David A. Cleinman I found to be a fun and exciting read. I guess I really like YA books they are so much fun!

  6. I've been thinking about what genre I obsess over...and it's really hard to put my finger on one! I have loved contemporary, fantasy, sci-fi, and dystopian, but it's really individual. My favorite books span several genres. Thanks to everyone for stopping by and talking about obsession!

  7. I can be a bit iffy when it comes to love triangles BUT I will admit, there are plenty out there that I love. Some like in The Hunger Games and the Iron Fey.

  8. I have always loved teen angst and teen issues type books. Like Go Ask Alice, Crank, I guess it would be Contemporary YA. Things that deal with real issue. However I would also read a hot new paranormal YA any day. Like Nightshade and Firelight
