SRS Wednesday Whip Tip #3: Justina Chen Headley

We are incredibly excited to welcome author and readergirlz co-founder Justina Chen Headley for our Wednesday Whip Tip! See Jolie's chat with Jill Alexander over at CuppaJolie today.
Justina's first novel, Nothing but the Truth (and a few white lies), won the Asian Pacific American Award for Youth Literature in 2007, and her third, North of Beautiful, received three starred reviews! Visit Justina at her website, her blog, and follow her on Twitter!
And what is Justina's best revision tip, you ask? It's encouragement with a side of whirplash:
Be gentle with yourself but hard on your work. In revision, this is the operative word: work. As in stop whining, do the work. As in your work now is to look unflinchingly at the problems in your manuscript--and apply every bit of your creativity to fixing those problems. As in complete your work; your readers await.
Thank you, Justina! And smackdowners, stay tuned for tomorrow's Lash Flash!

  1. Very helpful advice! Thanks, I'll apply it towards my WIP. I really enjoyed "North of Beautiful."

  2. Thanks, Justina! Great reminder.

  3. Thanks for the encouragement. Time for a cold, hard, dispassionate look at my WIP (along with a nice cuppa in order to be kind to myself.)

  4. For works-in-progress (WIPs) I always say: WIP it good!
